Preparing for My Dream Home

My husband and I have spent a lot of time consulting with an architect. After living in our cramped, starter home for the past 11 years, we were finally ready to make some needed changes to it. We have added an extra 600 square feet of space onto our house. Before the construction began, we finalized the plans for our new heating and air conditioning unit with our HVAC contractor. Because our home was going to be substantially bigger than it is now, we purchased a larger HVAC system. We also installed a new, digital thermostat inside my home. On this blog, I hope you will discover the best types of HVAC units to buy for mid-size homes. Enjoy!

3 Strange Noises You Shouldn't Hear From Your Furnace

by Rita Richardson

It's normal for your furnace to make noise as it operates. Note that most functional and well-serviced systems will run with a low humming noise. Moreover, if the heater is gas-powered, you might hear a tiny pop when it turns on. However, modern units have sound-dampening technology; hence you shouldn't hear the noise the system makes unless you're in the same room. Given this, loud and shocking noises from the system could spell trouble. Below are some sounds that you should never expect from your furnace.

When It Starts Grinding

Grinding indicates there is a problem with the mechanical component of the furnace. Often, the blower wheel develops complications that lead to this sound. In some cases, it could be that the fan is loose and is hitting against other metallic components inside the motor. If this is the case, you should schedule an immediate inspection so the HVAC expert can solve this problem. Also, grinding is common when the parts lack lubrication. Given this, regular system maintenance is the perfect way to ensure all the parts get lubrication and operate without loud annoying noises.

When the System Rattles

Rattling is a telltale sign that something is loose inside the furnace. In the best-case scenario, it could be a loose screw vibrating as the system operates. However, sometimes rattling could mean that your heat exchanger has a crack. Note that such a crack is a more severe problem because it can lead to carbon dioxide leaks into your home. Hence, you should be vigilant if the carbon dioxide detector has been going off. More so, deal with this as an emergency, and have a furnace repair expert access and fix the system before it leads to gas poisoning. Ultimately, if they suspect natural gas could be leaking by the smell, you will ask that you evacuate the home while waiting for repairs.

When It Makes a Loud Boom or Banging Sound

Booming and banging noises are indicators that a unit is in serious trouble. So, if you hear these noises, you should turn off yours immediately and call an HVAC expert. Note that the boom comes from gas buildup inside the heater, which could lead to an explosion that causes fire in the home. Hence, it is best to have the experts inspect and clear the gas. They will also seal any points where gas leaks and restore safety.

Call emergency heating repairs when you notice any of the sounds from your system. HVAC repair experts have the knowledge and experience to link every sound to its cause, and they can help you repair the furnace and restore safety in your home.
