Preparing for My Dream Home

My husband and I have spent a lot of time consulting with an architect. After living in our cramped, starter home for the past 11 years, we were finally ready to make some needed changes to it. We have added an extra 600 square feet of space onto our house. Before the construction began, we finalized the plans for our new heating and air conditioning unit with our HVAC contractor. Because our home was going to be substantially bigger than it is now, we purchased a larger HVAC system. We also installed a new, digital thermostat inside my home. On this blog, I hope you will discover the best types of HVAC units to buy for mid-size homes. Enjoy!

Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning

by Rita Richardson

Does the quality of air decline once you turn on your air conditioner? Well, high chances are you haven't had your air ducts cleaned in a long time, or the air filters are dirty. Most people only care for their air conditioners and forget to maintain the air ducts. That explains why the air coming from your vents is a bit dusty. So, when should you hire an air conditioner vent cleaning service? Well, immediately if you spot these signs.

Dusty Grills

You can easily tell the condition of your events by checking the grills. Remember that the grill acts as a window into your air vents. So, if there is any dust around the grills, your ducts could be having an issue. You can physically inspect the grills to see if there is any dust buildup. Alternatively, you can wipe the grill using a white cloth or tissue and check for dust.

Allergies

An increase in allergies is yet another indicator you need air conditioner duct cleaning. If your air vents have so much dust and mold, your family members will eventually start complaining about allergies. As long as the AC unit blows air through dusty vents, your allergies will continue to worsen. Have an HVAC technician check your air ducts to ensure they aren't responsible for the increase in allergies.

Poor Air Flow

Air conditioners don't just cool or warm your space. They also aid in air circulation. That explains why the air in your home becomes fresh after turning on your air conditioner. So, if your home still smells stuffy after turning on your air conditioner, there could be a massive problem with your air vents. They probably have dust or mold growing in them. Unfortunately, this problem will persist until you get the air vents cleaned.

Clogged Air Filters

Clogged air filters could also indicate your air vents are dirty. While you are advised to change your air filters after a few months, it's abnormal to have clogged filters after a couple of weeks. As you know, filters are responsible for trapping dust, pollen, pet dander, debris, and other contaminants. So, if you need to change air filters in a few weeks, it could mean your air vents need cleaning.

Pests in the Ducts

The presence of pests in your home is never a good sign. And as you know, pests love hanging around dirty areas. So, if you have been spotting rodents and insects hanging around your air vents, there is a likelihood your vents are pretty messy. You should also look for droppings and vermin dander around the ducts.
