Preparing for My Dream Home

My husband and I have spent a lot of time consulting with an architect. After living in our cramped, starter home for the past 11 years, we were finally ready to make some needed changes to it. We have added an extra 600 square feet of space onto our house. Before the construction began, we finalized the plans for our new heating and air conditioning unit with our HVAC contractor. Because our home was going to be substantially bigger than it is now, we purchased a larger HVAC system. We also installed a new, digital thermostat inside my home. On this blog, I hope you will discover the best types of HVAC units to buy for mid-size homes. Enjoy!

Summer Blizzard: How To React When Your Air Conditioner Is Too Cold

by Rita Richardson

Often, problems with the air conditioner are related to it being unable to cool down the home. The flip side to this is also a problem. If your air conditioner is making you shiver on its regular temperature, there is a problem in the system. Though some may want to be thankful for this change, not being able to properly control the temperature of your home can become a problem. The machine being out of order in this way can also cause mechanical issues in the system, which will be a costly fix. For those who notice that their air conditioner is running colder than usual, here are some next steps to take.

Set an independent thermostat next to the ac thermostat

One of the best ways to tell if the thermostat is the major malfunction is to set an independent thermostat next to the one for your air conditioner. You can use a digital or a mercury glass thermometer next to your usual machine. If the independent thermometer is reading at a lower temperature than you ac thermometer, the issue is likely to be a thermometer problem. Let the air conditioning maintenance services know about the separate readings.

Turn off the machine

Though it may be hot in the summertime, if the temperature is dropping too much in your home you should turn the machine off. It is a better idea to turn on the fans so that you have some ability to cool off without the entire home being too cold. If you have pets in the home, it can be especially important to turn off the air conditioner. Once the technician comes to your home, you can restart the machine so that they will be able to diagnose the issue.

Check for condensation in and around the machine

Along with the issue of temperature control, a home that is too cold will show issues of condensation. If there is condensation, you may need for the entire HVAC system to be properly cleaned. If there is condensation collecting, you will need to have the machine properly flushed out and the filter changed to stop any mold from forming. Ask the technician if there is any sign of freezing in the machine itself. If so, the actual machine will need to be inspected and cleaned to be sure that there are no ice formations which can cause a mechanical problem.
