One of the best ways to tell if the thermostat is the major malfunction is to set an independent thermostat next to the one for your air conditioner. You can use a digital or a mercury glass thermometer next to your usual machine. If the independent thermometer is reading at a lower temperature than you ac thermometer, the issue is likely to be a thermometer problem. Turn off the machine
Though it may be hot in the summertime, if the temperature is dropping too much in your home you should turn the machine off. It is a better idea to turn on the fans so that you have some ability to cool off without the entire home being too cold. Check for condensation in and around the machine

Ask the technician if there is any sign of freezing in the machine itself. If so, the actual machine will need to be inspected and cleaned to be sure that there are no ice formations which can cause a mechanical problem.
